1710 Little Compton, Rhode Island Selectmen Recommend the Selling of "Drink" at the Ferry, Manuscript Document
July 11, 1710-Dated Colonial Period, Manuscript Document Signed, "Nathaniel Searls", "John Palmer" and "Edward Richmond" as Selectmen of Little Compton, Rhode Island, Petition to the Court to sell "Drink" at the Ferry, Fine.
This original Manuscript Document measures about 8.5" x 4.5" with light folds, irregular left margin edge with small paper loss affecting two words of text. This Signed Document reads well written in rich brown on clean laid period paper. Blank reverse. This Document request is from The Selectmen of Little Compton, Rhode Island, who hereby have recommended to the General Court at Bristol that Mr. Fobe's (Lieutenant William Fobe's) be granted a License to be allowed to sell "drink" at his (Mr. "Foobes" Ferry) ferry location. Signed, "Nathaniel Searls," "John Palmer," and "Edward Richmond." Lieutenant William Fobes ran a ferry from Little Compton across the Sakonnet River to Newport, what is today part of Middletown, RI. He lived on the Great West Road on Lot #4 of the 'great lots' as designated by the founders, near Windmill Hill. An interesting request for an official License to sell "Drink" at the Ferry.
