Very rare historic early Oyster Bay, New York Manuscript Document, being a Deed of Sale for land in Queens County, New York. This Document measures about 14.5" x 11.75". Background history is that in 1664, the Dutch Colony of New Netherland was captured by the English and renamed New York. About 20 years later, Twelve original Counties were created in New York, and one was Queens. Oyster Bay was one of the original Five Towns in Queens County. Then, about 20 years later in 1704, this land sale took place, formalized by this written Deed, actually Hand-written by gentleman farmer "James Cock of Matonacock in the bounds of Oyster Bay in Queens County on Nassau Island in the Colony of New York...". We believe "Matonacock" refers to land once owned by the Native American Matinecock Indians. At the time the first Europeans arrived, there were about 6,500 Matinecocks Indians on Long Island. By 1685, all of the Matinecock Indian land had been bought by European Settlers, in exchange for "Twenty-Two Pounds and Four Shillings in current Silver Money of New York...". James Cock's Oyster Bay land was sold to John Mott. This Land Deed has Three Signed Witnesses, and was officially recorded and signed by John Townsend, the town's Records Clerk. "James Cock" signature and Red Wax Seal at lower right. This document has some old creases archival tape sealed fold splits and light even overall age tone. There is some show-through from the reverse docket, yet remains whole and complete for its 316 years since being written.
