Rare c. 1690 to 1705 British Military Ordnance Flintlock Militia or Volunteer Pistol Made by "F. HAWDON"
c. 1690 to 1705, Extremely Rare British Military Ordnance Flintlock Militia or Volunteer Pistol by F. HAWDON, Extremely Fine.
This style and form is thought to have been established around the Reign of King James II (1685-1689) and varieties began to be produced for the ordnance and for militia and volunteer units through the Reigns of William & Mary (1689-1694), King William III (1694-1702), and Queen Anne (1702-1714). This current example measures 20.25" overall length, and has a 13" long, .58 caliber, round two-stage smooth-bore barrel that is struck on the left side of breech with 2 oval Proof & View Marks, as well as what appears to be a deep "BROAD ARROW" Stamp (Showing Government Ownership). The barrel is secured to the stock by pins and the tang screw going through the stock from the bottom (which is an exceedingly early trait). The early convex banana shaped lock is secured to the stock by 3 side nails (screws), no bridle on the pan and has the maker's name engraved "F. HAWDON". This Pistol is in its Original Flintlock Configuration. All steel surfaces are smooth with no apparent rust or pitting except around the touch-hole area. The brass furniture conforms to the other known pistols of this period. The stock is in beautiful condition with raised relief around the tail of the lock plate and the barrel tang with only slight scratches and dings from years of service and handling. The brass tip wood ram rod is most likely a later replacement. In our opinion, this Pistol is overall in excellent condition. Under magnification, there is evidence of wood restoration just forward of the lower ram rod pipe (extremely hard to see), and it is unknown if this was a period repair or is simply as made. If such a repair or restoration was performed in the 20th century it is exceptional, and well worthy of any museum collection.
The Maker: "F. HAWDON" (Flower Hawdon), was an Apprentice to John Silke, 1696; free of Gunmakers Co., 1703. Proof piece, 1707. Gunmaker to the Ordnance, 1706-1711. Last reference was 1721.
