Central Russian Front winter of 1941 to 1942 Iron Cross 2nd Class with rare Army Flak Badge and General Assault Badge group of award documents to Obergefreiter Willi Braun, 1st Battery, 605th Motorised Air Defence Battalion, sometime in 1941 with the 36th Motorised Infantry Division, and then in 1942 part of the army troops of the 2nd Army and the 7th Army Corps, who served in a self-propelled army anti-aircraft unit equipped with three companies each equipped with 8 x 20 mm AA cannon and two quadruple 20 mm Flak guns, who was wounded in action during the campaign in France on 1st June 1940, and then saw service out on the Russian Front from 1941 as part of Army Group Centre with the 36th Motorised Infantry Division, being awarded the Iron Cross 2nd Class as a Gefreiter on 2nd November 1941, he served through the first Russian winter of 1941 to 1942, and saw service during 1942 in southern Russia where the battalion formed part of the army troops of the 2nd Army and the 7th Army Corps, being present in the Veronesh area in mid 1942. Awarded a rare award of the Army Flak Badge as an Obergefreiter on 15th April 1942, he then most unusually went on to receive this award in combination with the General Assault Badge, awarded to him on 5th August 1942, when serving with the 7th Army Corps. Braun was very seriously wounded for a second time on 15th September 1942, and evacuated to Germany for treatment at a hospital in Breslau, where he was recovering when he was awarded the Wound Badge in Silver on 15th October 1942. Braun was subsequently discharged as a result of his wounds via the Army Discharge Centre at Hamburg in early 1944. Comprising in order of award: 1) Wound Badge in Black Award Certificate, issued to: ÔSchŸtzen Willy BraunÕ, issued Ôin the fieldÕ on 25th June 1940, for a wound received on 1st June 1940, signed in ink by a Major as Battalion Commander. This is a large format field award printed version of the award document. 2) Iron Cross 2nd Class Award Certificate, issued to: ÔGefreiten Braun, Willi, 1./FlaBtl.605Õ, dated 2nd November 1941, signed in ink ÔGollnickÕ for Hans Gollnick as Generalmajor and acting GOC 36th Motorised Infantry Division, recipient of the KnightÕs Cross on 2nd November 1942, and the Oakleaves to the KnightÕs Cross on 24th August 1943. 3) Army Flak Badge Award Certificate, issued to: ÔObergefreiten Willi Braun, 1./Fla.-Btl.605Õ, dated 15th April 1942, signed in ink by a General of Infantry with the Commander in Chief of the Army. 4) General Assault Badge Award Certificate, issued to: ÔObergefreiten Willi Braun, 1./Fla.Btl.(Sfl.) 605Õ, dated 5th August 1942, signed in ink ÔHellÕ for Ernst-Eberhard Hell, General of Artillery and GOC VII Army Corps, recipient of the KnightÕs Cross on 1st February 1943, the Oakleaves to the KnightÕs Cross on 4th June 1943, and the German Cross in Gold on 14th June 1942. 5) Eastern Front Winter War Medal Award Certificate, issued to: ÔObergefreiten Willi Braun, 1.Fla 605Õ, dated 5th August 1942, and issued via the Army Discharge Centre at Hamburg on 18th January 1944. Signed in ink by an Oberstleutnant and Commander of the Army Discharge Centre at Hamburg. 6) Wound Badge in Silver Award Certificate, issued to: ÔObgefr. Willy Braun, Fp.Nr.33229Õ, issued on 15th October 1942, for a second serious wound received on 15th September 1942, signed in ink ÔDr KleinsorgÕ, as Oberfeldarzt and Chief Doctor I/III at (Field Post No.33229) the Luftgau Post Office at Breslau. Willi Braun was most likely mobilised on the outbreak of the Second World War, and then saw all of his active service with an Army Air Defence Battalion. As a SchŸtzen with the 1st Battery, 605th Motorised Air Defence Battalion, with the Army Troops, he saw service during the campaign in France in 1940 and was wounded in action on 1st June 1940, being awarded the Wound Badge in Black Ôin the fieldÕ on 25th June 1940.
