Medic-Unteroffizier Gustav Schmidt, 1stCompany, 541stGuard Battalion (Wach Battalion) Army Troops, who was wounded whilst serving with Army Detachment Hollidt, a unit put together to try and stem the Russian Advance after the successful encirclement of the German Sixth Army at Stalingrad. A scarce and very interesting small bravery document group consisting of 3 award certificates which relate to a former Senior Non-Commissioned Officer who saw service in a little known Guard Battalion, and who was involved in the post-Stalingrad fighting in the Don Region. Award Certificates: The Ostmedaille, awarded on 1stAugust 1942 as a Medic-Unteroffizier, 1/541stGuard Battalion. Signed for correctness by a Major and Battalion Commander. Note: the signature on this award certificate is the same as that on the later Wound Badge certificate but the individual is now a Major and the Battalion Commander (no longer in an acting capacity) and must therefore have been issued after February 1943. Unit Stamp: Fd Post No: 07 119 Ð HQ 541stGuard Battalion. The Iron Cross 2ndClass awarded by Army HQ on 15thFebruary 1943 as a Medic-Unteroffizier, 1/541stGuard Battalion. Signed by Hollidt as General of Infantry and Commander in Chief Army Detachment Hollidt. Hollidt was awarded the Knights Cross on 8.9.1941 as Generalleutnant and General Officer Commanding 50thInfantry Division and the 239thOakleaves on 17.5.1943 as General of Infantry and Commander in Chief 6thArmy. The Black Wound Badge awarded on 22ndFebruary 1943 for a wounding received on 18thDecember 1942 as a Medic-Unteroffizier, 1/541stGuard Battalion. Signed by a Hauptmann and acting Battalion Commander. Unit stamp: Fd Post No 07 119 = HQ 541stGuard Battalion. Gustav Schmidt was most likely mobilised on the outbreak of war in 1939, where he may have seen service in the Polish Campaign of September 1939 and then in the West in 1940. It is clear that Schmidt saw service on the Eastern Front with his unit, being awarded the Ostmedaille on 1stAugust 1942. As part of a Guard Battalion, Schmidt belonged to the Provost Troops together with the Feldgendermarie to the Supply Troops of the Field Army. Since they came into existence replacement wise from Local Defence units and later were in part reformed into Security Battalion, they are listed under Local Defence Battalions. They were often used temporarily as Army Troops. Wounded on 18thDecember 1942, this was most likely in the fighting around Millerovo and to the west of Stalingrad during the Red ArmyÕs advance there after the successful encirclement of Stalingrad, he was awarded the Black Wound Badge for this wound on 22ndFebruary 1943, shortly after he had received The Iron Cross 2ndClass on 15thFebruary 1943, by order of Army Group Hollidt, this almost certainly for the fighting around Millerovo, which was being attacked by the Red Army in December/January in an attempt to close the retreat route of Army Group A from the Caucasus. Nothing further is known of Schmidt after this point, or whether he survived the war, it is however possible that he joined the 541stSupply Battalion when the 541stGuard Battalion was disbanded and reformed as a Supply Battalion
