(Konrad was awarded the Knights Cross on 1.8.1942 and the German Cross in Gold on 23.2.1944 as General of Mountain Troops and General Officer Commanding XXXXIX Mountain Army Corps.) An undated typed translation of the Romanian Award Certificate for the award of the Loyal Service Cross 1stClass with Swords to Kuhn. Comments: 1. The Field Post Number 36 380B is written on ink below the typed text. This post number indicates the following subunit: 7thBattery, 335thArtillery Regiment in 335thInfantry Division which was formed from KuhnÕs former Battery Ð 7/150thArtillery Regiment in 50thInfantry Division. This post number indicates that this translation was probably typed much later than 10.5.1942 Ð the date of the actual award. 2. The German Translation of the decoration is incorrect and should read ÔTreu Dienst KreuzÕ and not ÔKriegsverdienstkreuzÕ. With the award of the commemorative certificate on 21stJuly 1927 we can assume that Josef Kuhn was an individual who joined the German Army in the 1930s or on the outset of war in 1939. As such he would have served in the campaign in France in 1940, and then in the campaign in the Balkans and in Greece in April/May 1941 before being moved to Romania in preparation for Operation Barbarossa. Taking part in the invasion of the Soviet Union with Army Group South, the 50thInfantry Division of which 150thArtillery Regiment was a part, fought past Odessa and up to Nikolayev, before moving onto the Crimea Peninsula. In the early fighting in the Crimea, on the advance to Sevastopol Kuhn was awarded the Iron Cross 2ndClass on 9thNovember 1941. It is possible that he missed a proportion of the winter fighting as he doesnÕt appear to have been entitled to the Ostmedaille. On 10thMay 1942 Kuhn was awarded the Romanian Loyal Service Cross 1stClass with Swords by the Romanian Ministry of Defence, it is unclear what this was awarded for, it could have been for fighting on the Crimea, but may also be a belated award for the fighting around Odessa in the previous summer, which was a largely Romanian led offensive. Continuing to fight in the Crimea, Kuhn would have likely been involved in the final assault on the Sevastopol fortress in June and July 1942. His service in the Crimea leading to his award of the Crimea Shield on 29thAugust 1942. In November 1942 the Division was moved to the Caucasus region in a final attempt to capture the oilfields there, before they had to defend against the heavy Russian attacks that began in the region shortly after the successful encirclement of Stalingrad in late November. KuhnÕs Division forced on the defensive, retreated back into the Kuban Bridgehead in February 1943 where it remained until the withdrawal of the forces from there in the autumn of 1943. Kuhn himself was awarded an Iron Cross 1stClass for an act of bravery in the northern sector of the Bridgehead during April, the award being made by Divisional HQ on 20thApril 1943. Clearly involved in a number of assaults and much heavy fighting, Kuhn was awarded the General Assault Badge on 25thJuly 1943. After evacuation from the Kuban Bridgehead, KuhnÕs unit served in the Crimea, although his Battalion was detached at the time of the surrender of the forces there in 1944, and thus he avoided being taken prisoner there. His unit subsequently became II/335thArtillery Regiment which fought in the southern Ukraine during July 1944 where the unit was destroyed in the Kishinev area. It is unknown whether Kuhn survived this disaster of the war. Kuhn would also have been entitled to the Kuban Shield for his fighting in the bridgehead there, but unfortunately this is not present.
