Gefreiter Claus Schlon, 1st Company, 22nd Air Defence Battalion (motorised), 22nd Infantry Division, who saw action in southern Russia during 1941-42 before being killed in action in an infantry attack on 14th May 1942 during the recapture of the Kerch Peninsula from the Red Army. A rare and interesting group of an award certificate for the Army Flak Combat Badge with its supporting recommendation. Certificate: Army Flak Combat Badge awarded by the Headquarters of the Army High Command on 1st May 1943 as a Gefreiter, 1/22nd Air Defence Battalion. Signed by Graf von Eulenberg on behalf of the General of Infantry with the Army High Command. Graf von Eulenber was awarded the German Cross in Gold on 7.12.1944 as Oberst and Commanding Officer 67thGrenadier Regiment (23rdInfantry Division) and the Knights Cross on 22.3.1945 as Oberst and Commandant of the Glogau Fortress. He fell in action on 8.4.1945 with the break out attempt in the fortress town of Bunzlau. Details about Schlon from ÔFlak Battalion (motorised) 22 Ð Seine GeschichteÕ Served on No.2 Gun in No 1 Platoon/1stCompany. He was a Schutze in August 1941 and had been promoted to Gefreiter by March 1942 Ð still serving on the same gun in the same platoon. He served with the battalion from the beginning of the campaign against Russia. His Commanders were: August 1941 Ð Company Commander Ð Oberleutnant Ullrich (German Cross in Gold as Officer Commanding Company on 19.1.1942, Mention in the Honour Roll of the Germany Army As Officer Commanding 1stCompany on 4.7.1941). Platoon Commander Ð Leutnant Dechene (German Cross in Gold as Number 1 Platoon Commander, 1stCompany, on 28.2.1942. March 1942 Ð Company Commander Ð Leutnant Steinacker (German Cross in Gold as Officer Commanding 1stCompany on 21.10.1942). Platoon Commander Ð Leutnant Schmitz. His commanding Officer was Hauptmann Hans von Hirschfeld who had been succeeded by Major Kurt Tremel by the time of his recommendation for the posthumous award of the Army Flak Combat Badge. During his time in Russia Schlon would have seen involvements in the actions at Pruth on the frontier, the Battles in Bessarabia, the Assault against the Stalin Line, the advance to the Dnieper, the Crossing of the Dnieper at Berislav, the attacks along the Sea of Azov, and the battles in the Crimea before he was killed in action near Sarajmin on 14thMay 1942 during the recapture of the Kerch Peninsula. While initially used for Air Defence support in the operations on the Kerch Peninsula, SchlonÕs unit was used in an attack against fixed Red Army positions including machine-gun posts on the 14thMay 1942 near Sarajmin, the attack overall was successful and the Red Army units were forced out of their positions, it was during this operation that Schlon was killed. It would be reasonable to assume that Schlon was additionally entitled to an Ostmedaille as he was serving in the Battalion in both August 1941 and March 1942.
