awarded to Obergefreiter Herbert Gršzinger, HQ 1542nd Supply Regiment, 542nd Volks Grenadier Regiment, 2nd Army, later 301st Grenadier Replacement and Training Battalion within the same division, who was wounded in action on three separate occasions, the first time on 22nd June 1941, this being the opening day of the invasion of Russia. Having served the first Russian Winter of 1941 to 1942, he was wounded in action for a second time on 30th March 1942, and was awarded the Iron Cross 1st Class on 18th October 1944. This being a most unusual award to what was technically a non-combatant unit, which however must have been involved in combat in the face of the enemy for Gršzinger to have received this high award. Gršzinger was then serving with the 301st Grenadier Replacement and Training Battalion within the same 542nd Volks Grenadier Regiment, when he was wounded in action for a third time on 18th January 1945 during the Russian breakthrough of the 2nd Army Front to the north of Warsaw which occurred from 14th to 20th January 1945. Comprising in order of award: 1) Eastern Front Winter War Medal Award Certificate, issued to: ÔObergefr. Herbert GršzingerÕ on 11th September 1942, and signed ÔWangenbergÕ as Hauptmann and acting CO on behalf of the Commander Div Supply Troops 1542. Also the short typed note sent to Herbert Gršzinger at his home address in Kornwestheim near Stuttgart by the Leutnant and Adjutant of 1542 Supply Regiment, it states Ôthe Medal ÒWinter Battle in the East 1941/42Ó is sent to you along with its certificate in the enclosureÕ. This dated 6th November 1944. 2) Iron Cross 1st Class Award Certificate, issued to: ÔObergefreiten Herbert Gršzinger Stab/Versorgungs-Regiment 1542Õ, dated 18th October 1944, and signed in ink ÔWeissÕ for Walter Weiss, Generaloberst and C-in-C 2nd Army, recipient of the KnightÕs Cross on 12th September 1941 and the Oakleaves to the KnightÕs Cross on 5th November 1944. 3) Wound Badge in Silver Award Certificate, issued to: ÔObergefreiter Herbert Gršzinger, Gren.Ers.u.Ausb.Batl.301Õ, dated at Weissenfels on 6th February 1945, for wounds received on 22nd June 1941, 30th March 1942 and 18th January 1945. Signed in ink by the Oberfeldarzt and Chief Doctor in the Reserve Hospital at Weissenfels. This led to his evacuation to the reserve for treatment at the Reserve Hospital at Weissenfels, this being the largest town of the Burgenlandkreis district, in southern Saxony-Anhalt, some 30 kmÕs south of Halle. It was whilst he was being treated at this hospital that Gršzinger was awarded the Wound Badge in Silver on 6th February 1945
