Cupid and Psyche (also known as Eros and Psyche) after the Greek original from 2nd century B.C., depicts the divine marriage of Cupid and Psyche told by Apuleius in Metamorphoses. Signed and dated "Scipione Tadolini 1869" on base. This sculpture is a fine example of Tadolini's meticulous technique showcased through soft curves juxtaposed with intricate details such as tendril-like curls and the textured drapery that begins at Pshche's waist and becomes sheer at the thigh. Scipione Tadolini was the son of Adamo Tadolini (1788-1868) who had taken over the studio of Antonio Canova (1757-1822) in 1818. ScipioneTadolini and his brother Tito were the second generation of what is now considered a dynasty of Roman sculptors whose Altier continued until 1967. The site of their studio is now the Museo Altier Canova Tadoline. This work, competed in 1869 was one of Tadolini's first sculptures after four years spent on his monumental sculpture, St Michael Overcoming Satan for Gardner Brewer, Boston, MA.
