Largely self-taught, Gertrude Abercrombie was an important female American artist who exhibited widely during the 1930s and 1940s. Her unusual Surrealist style and dark, foreboding compositions brought her curious success given her gender and style. She worked under the WPA/Federal Art Project from 1936 to 1940 and won several awards at exhibitions around Chicago during this same period. She painted well into the 1960s. This work from 1948, with AAA gallery label on the reverse of the original frame, is titled 'Beckoning' and includes several of the artist's favored themes including a lone woman, darkness, an owl, a flowing river and a less characteristic blazing moon. Signed lower right and dated '48, the panel measures 3.5 x 4.75 inches, frame measures 10.5 x 11.5 inches. Provenance: The Galleries of Associated, American Artists, New York, New York.
Very good original untouched condition.
