Attributed to Blanche Emily Williams Carstenson (1907-2002) Signed Carstenson lower right Dated 49 Oil on panel Masonite panel measures 17.5 x 23.5 inches, the frame 25.5 x 32.5 inches. Though most associated with batik-decorated textiles, needlework and fiber art, it is known that Blanche Carstenson also engaged in easel painting and print making. Few examples of either have been found though the date of this work, the signature and the situation of its recent discovery all contribute to its attribution as a painting by Blanche. She was married to sculptor Cecil Carstenson (1906 - 1991) in 1927. Cecil's biography mentions that just after serving in World War II, he attended Finlay Engineering College. This painting was recently found in the Kansas City home of Gordon Finlay on east 69th Terrace. Additional research may more firmly establish which Kansas City Carstenson created this work.
The painting in very good condition, there are no issues of damage or restoration, the surface is original. The frame has been restored in the lower left corner.
