Antique Applique Album Quilt 1840-1960 measures 81 by 81 inches. It is comprised of 16 appliquéd blocks, 16 by 16 inches, set straight, 4 by 4, with an 8 inch swag border on all 4 sides. It is hand pieced, hand appliquéd, hand reverse appliquéd, and hand quilted. The top is from 1840 and a label on the back corner tells us a family history of the quilt and that it was quilted about 1959 -1960. The batting is polyester and the reverse is an off white cotton. The edge is finished with and applied off white binding, by machine. It is in good condition with some small spots and the Turkey red solid is starting to abrade. One other madder print is starting to pop as well. There is a really nice arrangement variety of appliqué motifs including wreaths, flower baskets, Laurel leaves, and much more. There is a sleeve for hanging attached to the back along the top of the quilt The label states "Album Quilt, maker unknown, c1840. Dorothy M Zaggar purchased this quilt from Mary Williams of Sebastopol, California on July 7, 1880. The top was received as payment for work done by Mary's grandfather. Her father remembered this when he was a young man. The tops were in an aunts trunk in York, PA. Her name was Prisella M Garrett. When she passed away in 1958 or 1959, Mary inherited them. Her father was 96 when he passed away. The tops were quilted about 1959 -1960 by Mary's friend's aunt, Mrs. Ola Rockwell in Annapolis Pennsylvania. This quilt has a swag border and has a feathered wreath appliquéd in each corner in brown with 4 baskets of flowers in the for center blocks." From the Estate of Bobbie Aug. Bobbie Aug was a well known and regarded quilt historian, author, appraiser, and quilter for over a half a century. She was also an antique quilt dealer and quilt store co- owner and judge. Most notable is her work on the American Quilter's Society Quilt Appraiser Certification Committee and her early involvement in the Professional Association of Appraisers-Quilted Textiles.
