- Lot Description
2 African American Princess Saloo Quilts with Costume Artifacts. Princess Saloo was a native of Nigeria who was brought to Harlem probably in the 1940's. They performed a dance act in Harlem together for sometime. This group includes several pieces of beadwork from her performances, furs accessory, and 2 quilts, believed to have been made by her in the 1950-1960s, photo is NOT included but copied from the internet during research. A great piece of NYC Black History! Blue and off white stripy quilt is in a pattern that may have been reminiscent of Princess Saloo's homeland. It measures 78x89". The fabrics are a variety of cottons, barkcloth, and woven textiles. It is a very heavy quilt. The backing is a cotton retro print, and the batting may be a blanket. It is hand and machine pieced and hand quilted. In fair cotton with several spots and blue dye is migrating in some areas. The other quilt is a medallion style quilt with a barkcloth scene center, surrounded by colorful calico floral stripes. It measures 70x83". It is hand pieced and hand quilted. Thin possible blanket as batting, and a cotton floral print reverse. It is in very good condition. Other artifacts include a rabbit fur skirt with shells and beads, a beaded collar, a cowrie shell collar, a beaded necklace with an animal claw, a black bikini style costume top with beaded embellishment (very small), and a beaded cuff bracelet. Artifacts are in overall good condition with some bead loss and oxidation on findings. If you have any doubt, please ask questions! In house Flat Rate Shipping of $40 is a domestic shipping estimate for first lot and includes insurance. We will gladly combine multiple lots for your convenience and economy.
