Riusuke Fukahori
Goldfish, 2007
Acrylic And Epoxy Resin
Riusuke Fukahori is a contemporary Japanese artist known for his singular focus on goldfish as subject matter. Creating three-dimensional paintings of the fish using a unique method of pouring resin molds then hand-painting the resulting form, has led to Rukahori’s ability to craft hyper-realistic works. His near-obsessive observation of the creatures—“Goldfish Salvation” as he calls it—has brought him national renown, including numerous awards such as the Fuji Bank and Mizuho Bank Street Gallery prize in 2000 and 2003, a prize from Kyoto Saga University of Arts in 2001, and a Taro Okamoto Award for Contemporary Art in 2006. Born on January 13, 1973 in Aichi, Japan, Fukahori received his BFA in 1995 from the Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts and Music in Nagakute. Currently living and working in Yokohama, Japan, the artist continues to explore goldfish as his primary motif. His works are held in the collections of the Edogawa Art Museum and the World Children’s Museum in Hamada City in Japan.
