Information provided by the Artist: Lynn Criswell appreciates and embraces a wabi-sabi approach to life and artmaking and is not a linear thinker. When working in the studio, she finds the best starting points begin with a cluster of semi clear events, observations, and seemingly random thoughts: what’s important? What’s left out? And, what’s drawn together? The partnering of seemingly unrelated images makes perfect sense to her. In the studio, she usually begins with an assembly of assorted independent illustrative cut-outs, graphite line drawings, hand engraved flat lead images with applied color, and sometimes 3-D objects. She utilizes the studio floor and several tables to arrange, shuffle, and fabricate several works at one time. This generates and builds a running dialog between each piece. Criswell has lived and maintained a studio in Chico, California, for 40 years.
