Information provided by the Artist: Since his first encounter with screen-printing in the 1960s, Joe Strickland has integrated layering as a fundamental element in most of his work. He constantly pushes himself to explore new avenues and use a plethora of medium to discover new ways of making art. For Strickland, art is the process of making it. His work is typically non-representational abstractions composed of organic shapes and multiple layers of color. However, he is currently exploring minimalistic approaches to representational expression. He simplifies imagery by observation with a squinted eye, removing peripheral objects and focusing solely on the essential shapes of hue and value. Employing a hard edge to key shapes permits him to explore perspective in his work.
