Pablo Picasso (1881-1973, Spain), "Bullfight, Wounded Torero (corrida, Torero blesse) from the Vollard Suite, 1933," published 20th c., etching, editioned 3/3 in red pen lower right, signed in red pen lower right margin, presented in a polychromed frame, H.- 8 3/4 in., W.- 11 in., Framed H.- 25 3/4 in., W.- 29 5/8 in.
Condition
No, it has not been examined outside of the frame. There is no visible watermark within the frame. The edition shows signs of plate etching indentation and does not indicate a lithograph print. It could be from a later printing. We do not have a certificate of authenticity. The plate was definitely part of the Vollard Suite, which is verified by MoMA’s website and Christie’s website of a previous Vollard Suite sale. Unfortunately, we do not have any further information about the red ink signed and edition (3/3) areas. The piece is in very good condition and is a handsome example.
UPDATE (5/12/2022) – The piece was removed from the frame and it is now visible that the etching was printed on some kind of wax coated paper. The margins of the piece that lie within the mat have yellowed, most likely from a non-acid free mat (reference photos). The proper right side has eight pin holes, approximately 1 ½ inch apart from each other. On the same side, there is also a crease, approximately 3 inches from border. The margins around actual plate are as follows: left side- 5 ¼ in., right side- 3 3/8 in., bottom- 3 7/8 in., top- 3 3/8 inches. When lifting the paper up, it is somewhat translucent and the image is slightly visible. There is warping to paper borders, but the actual print does not seem to have this issue. The margin also has some dirt or some dark substance on bottom and top. The paper is being held in place by three pieces of special frame tape and paper strips. Please review additional photos for reference.
