Antique Brass Inlaid Rosewood Baby Grand Erard Piano, 1871-1880, # 43997, on tapered hexagonal legs, the lifting folding top with an inset circular medallion, H.- 36 1/2 in., W.- 55 1/4 in., D.- 83 in.
Condition
Condition consistent with age. 85 keys, typical of time period. Hammers all in adequate condition. No evidence of pest damage. Delaminated panel covering interior of pin block needs to be re-glued – it is slightly detached near proper right side, making it so that the action cannot be fully removed for service, nor can the key cover be fully lifted once closed. Delaminating does not affect action. Some dampeners need minor adjustments. All strings present; straight-strung. Pedals appear to be in working condition. No chips in original ivories. All original ivories present except for one, which has been replaced. Three original ivories detached but present. Soundboard has minor cracks per normal age and use and does not need to be replaced. Serial number matching throughout, 43997. Metal bracket with multiple screws across top two octave strings most likely used to do minor adjustments to string heights for upper two octaves, where currently the hammers do not meet the strings. Please note that pianos from this time period were most likely tuned to lower frequencies than A440, which is more common in modern western music. Some wood loss to sheet music desk, about ¼ in. x 1 ½ in. piece of wood where hinge is normally attached. Hinge still present, but wood needs to be filled in that area to reattach hinge. In other areas, some wood stripped where hinge screws attach. Brass inlay nearly all intact, loose in small areas but no major damage to inlay. Some wear to finish and would benefit from cleaning. Wonderful example of craftsmanship, in need of some restoration.
