The Young Hickory Banner. New York: September 21, 1844. Vol. I, No. VII. 16pp, 6.25 x 9.5 in.
A complete issue of the political journal devoted to the 1844 election of James K. Polk, Democratic Republican nominee for President, with a large masthead featuring a jugate portrait of Polk and his running mate, George M. Dallas.
The journal is filled with political news, including an article addressing the "True Issues of This Presidential Canvass," an account of a "great meeting at Tammany Hall," and statistics outlining the changes in Whig majorities since 1840, which, according to the pro-Democratic journal, "show conclusively that Whiggery is progressing backward...No candid man, be he Whig or Democrat, can examine the figures without forming a conclusion that Henry Clay, and all his federal measures, are doomed to a defeat..." Followed by a list of fifty reasons why Clay should not be elected president and the music and lyrics to "Oh, Cooney, Cooney Clay" (printed on last page).
Some light wear along perimeter, including few short tears, small creases. Few light spots, areas of light toning.
