Lot of 25 albumen prints by Frank J. Haynes, 4.75 x 7.75 in., mounted recto/verso on album pages, which are separated from binding. Accompanied by an index of images.
The album includes the following views of Yellowstone National Park:
Gardiner Canyon, which shows a roadway running through the center of the image, and includes a wagon and single rider, the detail is crisp, with even the facial features of the men visible. Slight indentations on sky portion of image, discoloration to mount board.
Liberty Cap and Hotel, with the rock spire known as Liberty Cap featured along the right-hand side of the image, and two men resting in its shade. The hotel is visible in the distance. Retains fine tones, good detail.
Minerva Terrace, pictured in winter. The overlapping pools of the terrace are frozen, with long icicles streaming downwards. Mist can be seen rising above parts of the waterscape. Fine condition.
Pulpit Terrace, with the terrace's water frozen in wintertime, the reason for its name is obvious. A sharp ledge stands above a clear drop, rounded like a preacher's pulpit. Excellent condition.
Golden Gate, capturing a horse-drawn cart with passengers that can be seen rounding a bend near the iconic standing stone. Detail is evident in the trees in the distance, while the rocks seem to shimmer under the intense sun. Excellent condition.
Golden Gate and Bridge, taken from an opposing angle to its predecessor, the photo shows the mountain's massive structure, putting a tiny roadway and trestle in perspective. Some light scrapings to upper left, overall excellent tones and condition.
Obsidian Cliff, a beautiful image of famous Obsidian Cliff as well as its reflection in the water below it. The detail of the rock face is magnificent for a photograph of this size.
Black Growler, a tight stream of steam erupts from a narrow fissure. Heat wilted or wind-blown trees are seen in the background. Good clarity.
Gibbon Canyon, a waiting wagon can be seen to the left of the large, dominating rock.
Excelsior from Road, Haynes took the only known photo of Excelsior in full eruption in 1888, and this image shows what may be the beginnings of a large eruption or even a smaller eruption itself. Steam can be seen rising well over 20 feet, and in the foreground, a carriage is stopped and watching the site.
Morning Glory, with the iconic hot spring dominating the frame. The edges of the photo are a bit over-exposed, some light white spotting.
Grotto Geyser, with steam blowing off the eerie limestone formation rising from the ground. Some white spotting on left side of image.
Punch Bowl, the rather unimaginatively named geyser is pictured close up. Light steam rises from the basin.
Oblong Geyser, with the crater pictured in wintertime, showing ice encrusting its edges. Steam still rises above the heated water. An attractive image, good condtion.
Giant Geyser, with spectators visible beside the huge stream of water that rises vertically. Excellent condition.
Old Faithful Geyser, showing a man standing beside Yellowstone's most famous geyser. Excellent detail.
Castle and Beehive Geysers, steam and clouds dominate this image. In the foreground is Beehive Geyser, while in the distance a large sprout can be seen rising from Castle Geyser. Good condtion.
Yellowstone Lake, a tranquil image of this body of water. Excellent condition.
Hayden Valley, a wide angle shot of Hayden Valley. Mainly dominated by the river running down its length and off into the distance. The many trees retain a crisp quality.
Point Lookout and Great Falls, some discoloration to center of photo. Detail of the waterfall and promontory remain.
Great Falls of Yellowstone, the artist has deliberately overexposed the edges of the image, so the rushing falls are all that remain. Excellent image and condition.
Great Falls of Yellowstone, showing the falls pictured in situ, falling down the rock face. A fine image.
Grand Canyon from Grand View, the massive cut runs directly down the center of the image, the steep hills line its sides. A bit discolored in the background, the foreground remains sharp.
Grand Canyon from Inspiration Point, the Colorado River can be distinctly seen running the length of the canyon. Some white spotting on the photo's right hand side. Fair condition.
