US Army Special Orders, handwritten on blue-lined paper, 8 x 12.25 in., 2pp. "Proceedings of a Board of Survey convened at Fort Bridger, W.T. Aug. 11th 1858, in compliance with the following orders, viz. - /Head Quarters Fort Bridger W.T. Aug 11, 1858./ Special Orders No. 16/ A Board of Survey, to consist of Capt. Geo. H. Stewart, 1st Cavalry, and 2d. Lt. J. H. Taylor, 1st Cavalry, will convene today at 10 A. M. or as soon thereafter as practicable to examine and report upon certain Ordnance Stores and Camp and Garrison Equipage, pertaining to Companies 'E.' & 'H.' 6th Infantry, and Company 'K.' 1st Cavalry, for which 2d Lieut. Jos. A. Smith, 6th Inf. and Capt. Geo. H. Stewart, 1st Cavalry are respectively responsible./ By order of Lieut. Col. Hoffman/ (Signed) Jos. H. Taylor/2d. Lieut 1st Cavalry/Post Adjt."
The order is then followed with a brief written report from Captain Stewart and 2nd Lieutenant Taylor listing the items reviewed, including holsters and pouches, a valise, curry combs, horse brushes, and blankets, and noting that "The Board finds the above names articles unserviceable and worthless." A final note dated August 13, 1858, indicates that the report was "Approved and the property will be turned over to the Quarter Master for the public service, and dropped from the returns. (Signed) W. Hoffman, Maj & Bvt. Lt. Col. 6th Inf./Commanding." Then, "I certify that the above is a true copy/G. H. Stewart/Capt. 1st Cavalry."
In 1858, Fort Bridger was a remote US military outpost in the Wyoming Territory. Originally constructed by the legendary frontiersman Jim Bridger and his partner Louis Vasquez in the early 1840s, the fort served as a fur trading and supply outpost for emigrants. Over the course of the next decade and a half the fort became the center of a prolonged conflict ensnaring Jim Bridger, the Mormons, and the US Army, all of whom laid claim to the fort at varying times. By 1857, tensions between the US government and the Mormons reached a tipping point, and the "Utah War" erupted. President Buchanan sent US Army troops to install a new governor in the Utah Territory, replacing Brigham Young, and as part of their response the Mormons burned Fort Bridger to the ground. At the time this Special Order was written in August 1858, the fort was definitively under the control of the US Army who had only two months before re-established the fort as a US Army outpost and had begun the work of rebuilding the fort. The Army operated the post on and off over the next decades until it was closed in 1890 with the end of the Indian Wars.
Some pencilled notes on the upper right hand corner of the document as well as on the back upper right corner. Slight toning along edge lines and small dampstain on top edge, but all text remains easily legible. Overall letter is in good condition.
