Binder 11.5 x 13 in., containing four foldout reports on weather conditions in the Northeast Pacific Ocean, dated July 26, August 20, September 14, and September 4, 1945. Made by the 53rd Reconnaissance Squadron, 311th Reconnaissance Wing. Each has a map with isobars and fronts recorded, with overlay showing position (dot) and direction (arrow) from which the accompanying numbered photographs were taken. At the bottom of the page is recorded pressure, wind, temperature, etc. These are then followed by a 1p discussion of the conditions and anything else noteworthy that the flight crew encountered. Three of the maps include 3pp each (taped together so they fold), with one map page, six photographs on the second page, and discussion page; the fourth is comprised of 4pp including 12 photographs (2pp). All are stamped front and back (as folded) with "Restricted." The reporters are Joseph O'Kelley (1st Lieutenant Air Corps) and Mark J. Schroeder (1st Lieutenant Air Corps), each with two reports. The first has a note on the back of the group, "NE Pacific Ocean Vancouver Island."
This time frame is near the end of the Pacific Theater war, with the bombs dropping on Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and 9, and the surrender signed September 2. Since most of the Pacific war was carried out between islands and small island groups, this kind of data collection would have been crucial to both sea and air operations.
