- Lot Description
Three British military maps of the European Front in WWI, approx. 25.5 x 35 in., linen-backed. Scale 1:20,000, 5 meter contour interval. Belgium, Sheet 20 S.W., (edition 5A), centered on Noordschotebroek. Most of the trenches are German. France Sheet 51B N.W. (edition 6A). Trenches corrected to March 4, 1917. This shows both Allied and German trenches just to the west of Arras. 25.5 x 35.5 in. Front with "Roeux" in blue crayon. Third is France, Sheet 51B S.W. (adjacent to the previous, also edition 6A). Both sets of trenches in the eastern part of the map. This is a region of small towns dotting a relatively rural area. The largest aggregation seems to be St. Leger, the very northern part of which is on the bottom edge of the map, with Croisilles being just a few miles northeast, not far from the Belgian border. Today, it appears that Croisilles is the larger of the two, where the opposite seems to have been true a century ago. Most of the British trenches seem to be artillery trenches.
