Albumen carte de visite, lightly hand colored, titled on recto, Wilson Chinn, a Branded Slave from Louisiana. Also exhibiting Instruments of Torture used to punish Slaves. Although uncredited, the photograph was produced by Kimball of New York in 1863. Verso imprint reads: "The nett proceeds from the sale of these photographs will be devoted exclusively to the education of colored people in the Department of the Gulf, now under the command of Maj. Gen. Banks."
A rare and dramatic image of slavery, produced during the Civil War and meant to inflame Northern sympathies. Chinn is shown wearing a variety of restraints and other instruments of "punishment." A seldom encountered carte, this the fourth example we have been privileged to offer since our inception.
Top right and left corners clipped. Image has lightened a bit. With some light soiling, especially visible in top portion of photograph.
