Mudros

Depicts ships on the water at sunset, with mountains making up the horizon.
William Wiehe Collins was an English architectural and landscape painter who studied at the Lambeth School of Art and the Académie Julian in Paris, eventually having his work exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of British Artists, and the Royal Institution. During World War I, he served in the navy in Egypt and the Dardanelles. Collins took the subject for this painting from his time in the navy. Mudros is a small Greek port on the island of Lemnos in the Mediterranean, which became important in the British war effort to gain control of the Dardanelles Strait. Though Mudros' importance in this respect was somewhat short-lived, the port was later the site of the armistice between Turkey and the Allies, signed in October of 1918.
