A cased Maynard rifle and barrel set from
William Read & Sons, Dealers in Guns and Shooting Tackle, Boston. Lot includes a Maynard improved target rifle No. 16 buttstock and frame configuration, complete with four interchangeable barrels. All items are housed in a leather case, with green spun wool lining and two leather buckling straps. The interior of the upper lid has an original paper label. Each component has a fitted compartment in the case, which includes four complete boxes (25 rds each) of Maynard .32 caliber patched bullets. Also included is one unopened tin of 250
UMC Improved Copper No. 2 Primers.
The lot also includes a four-page flyer with handwritten prices and a handwritten letter attached from William P. McFarland of the Massachusetts Arms Company. The letter, dated March 11th, 1868, is detailing the process of selecting and ordering various barrels for certain stocks.
Condition
The box has some wear to the leather exterior corners. Some of the sewn leather straps on the exterior have separated. The interior of the upper part of the case has some slight wear to the leather along with some separation to the stitching. Apart from one or two very minuscule scuff marks to a few of the barrels and some small dings to the buttstock, all components are in virtually near mint condition.
