Printed broadside, 6 x 9 in., bold heading EXTRA!/ Pres. McKinley Assassinated.
A same-day report of McKinley's shooting, with an erroneous report of his death.
The broadside continues "Shot While Attending the Buffalo Exposition Today==Friday" dating the notice to Friday, September 6, when McKinley was shot by Leon Czolgosz in the Temple of Music on the grounds of the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo New York. McKinley was shot at 4:07pm, meaning the extra must have been circulated that evening. "A telephone message was received here late today--Friday--that President McKinley had been shot and killed while in attendance at the Buffalo exposition./ No facts can be obtained at present, but as the message was repeated the appalling report in all probability is true." The president was, in fact, not yet dead, and survived almost eight more days until succumbing to his wounds in the early morning of September 14.
Condition
Chipping at edges and separation at three horizontal folds, reinforced with tape on verso.
General wear with some losses especially at corners/edges.
