American, ca 1855. A plain compass, having a silvered face, circular level and folding vanes, marked Wm. J. Young / Maker / 3426 / Philadelphia; overall lg. 12.5 in., needle lg. 4.5 in.
William J. Young (1800-1870), was born in Philadelphia. He apprenticed to Thomas Whitney and remained at Whitney's shop until 1824. In 1825 he opened his own shop on South Front Street in Philadelphia. Young invented the American Transit, the standard United States surveying instrument that was used for the next 150 years. Young was one of the premier instruments in the United States from about 1830 to 1860. This compass is smaller than the standard surveyor's compass of the time, and was most likely intended for a gentlemen surveyor. The folding vanes were a special feature and have not been encountered on any other Young instruments.
