Albumen cabinet card credited to Mora, Broadway, NY, on mount below portrait.
A rarely encountered studio portrait of the famous showman early in his career.
Taken ca 1875 by the celebrity New York photographer Jose Mora, only a few years after "Buffalo Bill" first appeared on the stage in "Scouts of the Plains," this extraordinary portrait captures the charisma of the young star that would propel him to a 40+ year career and make him one of the most famous performers in the world. He wears an elaborate Western-inspired but impractical outfit embellished with fur trim, fringe, and embroidery that would become typical of the show regalia of himself and other performers in his Wild West Show, and sports the same facial hair style he would wear until his death in 1917. Cody holds a rolling block rifle in one hand and poses as if spotting a threat on the horizon, ready to draw his ivory-handled Remington conversion revolver. Mora made a few different views during this session, including a famous head shot, and all are very rarely seen at market.
Condition
Near-excellent. Mount corners are like new and the print with only faint spotting in the upper field.
Item is in good overall condition, one end has been glued back on.
