Wheeling Intelligencer. Wheeling, WV: November 28, 1889. Vol. XXXVIII, No. 78. 2pp, 21.5 x 25 in. Features an article with an interview with Anderson "Devil Anse" Hatfield on the Hatfield-McCoy feud. Headlines: "Devil Anse / Tells the True History /of the Famous Hatfield-McCoy Feud to an Intelligencer Representative. / And Puts his Mark to the Statement When Read to Him. / A Very Thrilling Recital / The Famous Head of the Hatfield Family not so Black as Painted."
Anderson Hatfield gives his life's story, beginning with when and where he was born, when his ancestors came to western Virginia, who his parents were and names his siblings who survived to adulthood. He gives his date of birth, his wife's name and the date they were married, and their children. He recounts his Civil War service in the 45th Virginia (CSA) and his recruitment of another regiment from the region. Anse notes that the three McCoys now on trlal (Jonse, Marion, and Tom) ("who are now trying to kill me") were once part of his regiment.
He then begins the recounting of the feud and its causes. Floyd Hatfield and Randolph McCoy had married sisters, and got along fine until "1873 or 74." Some "difficulty" arose over a sow and her piglets, leading to a lawsuit. McCoy lost and accused Hatfield of giving false testimony in court. Floyd hit Randolph with a rock and the war was on.
The story of how the reporter tracked down Anderson Hatfield in town, how he was "tricked" into coming to the Marshal's office and his history of the feud take up two full columns of the paper.
A first-hand account while the hostility was still in progress.
Some tears at the margins and to part of the text, but does not affect the Hatfield story; repaired by some tape. Strip of toning along right side.
