Kennedy, Joseph P. (1888-1969). American businessman, politician, and patriarch of the famed Kennedy dynasty. TLS in the months following Kennedy's resignation as Ambassador to Great Britain, "Joseph P. Kennedy." 1p, 7.25 x 10.5 in., New York, NY. January 23, 1941. Addressed to Mrs. Elsie Bieber.
Joseph P. Kennedy was appointed by FDR as Ambassador to Great Britain in 1938, however, by late 1940 he was forced to resign on account of his pro-Nazi political leanings and vocal reluctance to enter World War II. This letter is written shortly after his resignation. The message in its entirety reads: "Dear Mrs. Bieber: I am indeed very grateful to you for your kind message of January 22./ I want to assure you that I sincerely believe our future course should always be based on 'What is best for the United States of America?' Should this test be applied by every one of us I am sure America will not go to war. Yours very truly, Joseph P. Kennedy"
