Harman, S.W. HELL ON THE BORDER: he hanged eighty-eight men : a history of the great United States criminal court at Fort Smith, Arkansas, and of crime and criminals in the Indian Territory, and the trial and punishment thereof before his honor Judge Isaac C. Parker, "the terror of law-breakers," and by the courts of said territory, embracing the leading sentences and charges to grand and petit juries delivered by the world famous jurist - his acknowledged masterpieces, besides much other legal lore of untold value to attorneys, and of interest to readers in every walk of life - a book for the millions -illustrated with over fifty fine half-tones. Fort Smith, Ark.(ansas), The Phoenix Publishing Company, (1898). First Edition. 8 3/4 by 5 1/4 inches in a modern fine binding of quarter leather and marbled board covers with gilt decoration and titling to the spine and five raised bands. With the original printed green wrapper covers bound in, complete in 720 pages with frontis portrait of Judge Parker and "press opinions" at the end. Interestingly, with the stamp of "The Brown News Co., Ft. Smith, Ark.," on a front blank page and again on the verso of the rear printed green wrapper. A rare book printed in an edition of 1,000. Adams: "Adams 150 # 68: "The rare original edition has become a collector's item and is the chief source of practically every book and feature story about the old court and Oklahoma outlaws..." HOWES H203. SIX-GUNS 929. RADER 1780.
The professional fine binding shows 4 small scuffs to the leather but is otherwise Near Fine and fresh. Approximately 8 pages have had professional marginal paper restoration - at the time of binding when the pages were trimmed. Complete with the original printed green wrapper covers and a striking example of what has become a very difficult book to find in nice condition.
