Stratton, R.B. CAPTIVITY OF THE OATMAN GIRLS: BEING AN INTERESTING NARRATIVE OF LIFE AMONG THE APACHE AND MOHAVE INDIANS. New York: Printed for the Author, 1858. 3rd Edition; marked "Fourteenth Thousand" on the title page; the first edition being essentially unobtainable (Howe's "d"), and the 2nd also quite rare. 7 3/8 by 5 1/4 inches in the original blind decorated brown pebbled cloth with gilt titling and decorations to the spine. This expanded edition published in the year following the first includes 290 pages and 5 inserted full page illustrations including the famous "chin tattoo" portrait of Olive Oatman frontispiece, plus a full page map and 2 pages of "Notices of the Press," at the end. From the preface: "The matter added is chiefly of the peculiar traditions and superstitions of the tribes who were the captors and possessors of Miss Oatman." WAGNER- CAMP 294:4. AYER 284. The plate at p. 272 has a closed tear (with no loss of image); the yellow coated rear free endpage has separated but is present; and there is edgewear and rubbing, particularly at the head of the spine. Otherwise a clean and Very Good example of the 3rd edition of this enormously popular captivity account.Condition
