Germany: Heilbronn und Rothenburg, 1771; 1793 (with second engraved pictorial title page). 13 by 8 1/4 inches in an early 1/2 leather and marbled boards. 74 full page copper plate engravings of weaving patterns. From the Art Institute of Chicago website: "In compiling this volume, Johann Michael Kirschbaum, a master weaver of patterned linens in Heilbronn, Germany, aimed to offer fellow weavers and patrons a selection of patterns that could be executed with ease. Kirschbaum notes in the foreword that he organized the book according to the complexity of the patterns, beginning with the simplest weaves. He states that those interested in designs of greater difficulty can consult “Master Frickinger’s weaving book,” a reference to Johann Michael Frickinger’s Useful Weaver’s Tie-Up Book (Nützliches Weber Bild Buch) of 1740, which includes more elaborate patterns. However, he goes on to advise that weavers should not occupy too much time with complex designs, since they require more effort and do not necessarily result in greater profit, a pragmatic approach that differs from Frickinger’s. Unlike Frickinger, Kirschbaum did not claim that the designs in his book were his original work; rather, he offered the volume as a source book and starting point. Several reprints of Kirschbaum’s book were issued during the nineteenth century, and some of the patterns that feature star designs and pierced squares became quite popular among American coverlet weavers."
