British. Pencil and watercolor on paper, matted and framed under glass; 10 x 13.5 in. (sight), 22 x 25 in. (frame).
Designed by Sir William Symonds, Chief Surveyor of the Navy, HMS Pique belonged in the 1830s and 40s to an experimental squadron meant to test new design, armament and propulsion techniques. Her first commander was Captain Edward Boxer (1837-1841). During that time, she sailed to North America, the West Indies, and the Mediterranean. Most notably, she was involved in operations along the coast and in the Middle East, including the bombardment of the city of Acre. Recent renovation work on the city wall revealed three cannonballs fired by Pique during the battle. After 1841 and until 1846, the ship served in North America and the West Indies, including as a cable ship in Portsmouth Harbor during the laying of telegraph cables. Under the command of Captain Frederick Nicolson on the Pacific Station, Pique was part of the Anglo-French squadron involved in the Russian War and Anglo-Chinese War, and was at the siege of Petropavlovsk (September 1854). Later on, in the early 1880s, Pique was used as a hospital hulk to quarantine cholera-afflicted sailors, and was eventually broken up in 1910.
