Harding, Warren G. (1865-1923). President of the United States (1921-1923). TNS as President, 1p, Washington, DC. August 14, 1922, on White House letterhead. Signed Warren G. Harding. To Colonel Thomas O. Marvin, Chairman, US Tariff Commission. Harding writes: Thank you for your note of August 9th, conveying a quotation which gives evidence of Great Britain's determination to protect its shipping. I think most of our government agencies have long since been convinced of that fact, but it seems to be difficult to have the American people understand it.
Harding was a native of Ohio, serving in the state Senate and as Lieutenant Governor before seeking a national office. He was elected to the Senate in 1914 (taking office in March 1915), where he served until being elected President in the 1920 election, the first sitting Senator elected President. Harding died of a heart attack just barely over two years into his term, at the age of only 57. Harding was the last of 8 Ohioans elected to the highest office in the land.
