Lot of 2 ALsS. Wadsworth, Elijah (1747-1817). Revolutionary War Captain, Major General in War of 1812, and Early Ohio Pioneer. First ALS, 1p, 7.5 x 12.75 in., "Headquarters Portage." [September] 30, 1812; second ALS, 1p, 7.5 x 12.75 in., "Headquarters Huron." October 23, 1812, addressed to Major Elisha Whittlesey, Brigade Major and Ohio Representative.
Major General Elijah Wadsworth writes concerning his war responsibilities and militia movements during the War of 1812.
A seasoned Revolutionary War veteran, Major General Wadsworth was very familiar with military life, which made him well suited as a high ranking officer in the War of 1812. He recruited and organized the 3000-man militia and coordinated the defense of one third of Ohio. Part of his duties required that he procure munitions and supplies necessary for the militia. In his September letter, he requested some of these items including a small bag of apples he felt "would be very agreeable." In his second letter to Major Elisha Whittlesey, who later became one of the founders of the Whig Party and Ohio Representative, he discusses the militia's movements to a new post. He writes:
By letter from Gov. Harrison of the 13th he has fixed on Upper Sandusky for headquarters for the Right Wing of the Army, which will compose a Brigade from Virginia, the Pennsylvania 2400, the artillery and my detachment nothing further, except our March from Portage 60 admits through the Woods you will recollect the Cleveland People made a more of it, than the Israelites did through the wilderness and Red Sea, which we executed in 3 days, with about 30 wagons heavy loaded with arms.
Typical folds of the letters and toning of the paper. Some brittle folds and minor tears at the folds and flaking towards the margins of the paper.
