Reid, Albert T. (1873-1958). Pen and ink cartoon, 11 x 15 in., signed lower right, "Albert T. Reid," and dated lower left August 3, 1921. Entitled "The Hungry Bear Becoming Unmanageable," the cartoon depicts Russian Communist Party founder and first head of the Soviet Union Vladimir Lenin attempting to wrangle a muzzled bear. Lenin says, "I may need some help to let go."
In 1921, the Russia that Lenin presided over was struggling to recover from the bloody civil war the Communist Revolutionary helped instigate, with widespread poverty and famine impacting much of society. At this time, Lenin faced a peasant uprising strikingly similar to that which he'd ridden to power years earlier. The Russians waged strikes throughout the cities and rural sections of the country, and like the bear depicted in Reid's cartoon, they were becoming unmanageable for Lenin, and posing a significant threat to the stability of his government.
Albert T. Reid, born in Concordia, KS, studied at the New York School of Art and the New York Students Art League. His political cartoons appeared in the New York Herald, the Saturday Evening Post, The American, McClure, and other publications. After his death, the University of Kansas established the Albert T. Reid Cartoon Museum.
Toning of the paper and a light brown smudge on the bottom left portion of the cartoon.
