Hand-colored lithograph, 12.5 x 10.25 in. Vista de San Francisco de California. Signed in the foreground "Urbano Lopez."
A beautiful portrayal of a young city that will soon experience explosive growth.
The image presents a view towards San Francisco with a variety of buildings and tents dotting the hilly landscape. To the right is the bay with an assortment of ships in the harbor, and one wharf. In the foreground on a prominence overlooking the city are two men, one riding a burro and one walking with what appears to be either an axe or a "hobo" style pouch on a stick. The brilliant coloring of the foliage indicates the season is most likely autumn.
The artist, Urbano Lopez, was most likely of Mexican descent. Other examples of his work which could be located also focus on vistas as well as Mexican street scenes and interiors. His name appears on prints dating from the same period including Vista del Panorama de Mexico ca 1850, Vista de la Bahia de Acapulco, and the Colegio de Mineria and Interior de la Catedral de Mejico in Mexico City. His Californie. Vue de la Ville de Sacramento was published in Paris, and it seems that Lopez may have been associated at times with lithographic publishing firms in Paris.
Trimmed to the edge of the image and taking the rule of the border at right, with blank portion of the lower margin cut away leaving just the identification of the view. Some foxing. Tipped on an old, stiff backing sheet. As a result of being tipped on the backing sheet, partial separation in few areas of print, including "TA" in "VISTA," with "TA" still affixed to mount; plus small area in top right corner of print still affixed to mount. Images of these small areas of separation are available upon request.
