- Lot Description
ADS, North Carolina, July 24, 1798. 1p, 7 x 11 in. Sale of "negro Tom" to John Cross (also spelled Cranes, Craws, Crawes and Crass in same document) for $200 by Levi Rawls. Rawls lists his home as "beartee county," likely Bertie County, the same as listed for the buyer. This is a predominantly rural part of North Carolina, which historically grew tobacco and cotton as cash crops, and crops that were worked primarily by slaves.
Condition
Separated at horizontal fold, overall toned. Some old ink smears. Docketed on verso.
One teaspoon by another maker - pattern very close.
