Vernacular Hepplewhite Secretary Bookcase in Tiger Maple
American (possibly Upstate New York), 19th century. An outstanding vernacular Hepplewhite secretary bookcase in tiger maple, the upper section having a broken-scroll pediment terminating in rosettes and flanking a carved steeple-top finial over two paneled doors opening to a three-shelf interior, the lower section with mid molding and a thumbmolded fall front opening to a desk interior with drawers, dividers, and a central prospect door, all over four dovetailed and graduated drawers, the faces embellished with scratchbeading and brass handles and escutcheons, the whole over a shaped apron and rising on French feet; ht. 88, wd. 43, dp. 19.75 in.
Top and bottom sections married. Some restorations and additions throughout. Feet repaired. Brasses replaced as well as the fall front's iron hinges.
