Cabinet card portrait of Johnson, a Northern Ute as pencil identified on verso, standing in a studio setting holding a staff topped with a large scalp lock in his right hand and a pipe in his left hand. A tobacco bag hangs from his wrist. The butt of a holstered pistol is partially visible in the folds of the blanket wrapped around the subject's waist. Credited in pencil on verso to W.G. Chamberlain, Denver, CO, ca 1868. Chief Johnson would later go on to take part in the Meeker Massacre, a conflict that occurred on September 29, 1879 when Ute warriors attacked and killed Nathan Meeker, Indian Agent of the White River Ute Reservation in Colorado, and several other members of the agency.
Image is a bit dark, but contrast remains very good.
