- Lot Description
.70 caliber, 2.375 "barrel" receptacle to accept Coston patent flare. All brass construction with iron trigger, hammer and flare securing lever, 9.5" in overall length. Left side of frame marked in three lines: U.S. O. Y. W. / W.N.J. / 1864, indicating manufacture at the US Navy Ordnance Yard facility in Washington, inspected by WNJ (US Navy inspector of Ordnance W.N. Jeffers) and dated 1864. Barrel and frame are both assembly numbered 1 on the left side as well, as are both frame assembly screws. The signal "pistol" was not a conventional flare gun that projected a flare into the air, but rather a flare lighter and holder that ignited one of the various Coston patent colored flares, which were held in the "pistol" while it burned. Approximately 1,000 of these signal pistols were produced circa 1861 through the early 1870s, and fine condition Civil War dated examples are extremely rare. For a collector of US military flare guns, this is one of the "bookends" of the collection, as the first US model to see any kind of significant production.
Fine. Brass with a gorgeous, untouched and un-cleaned deep ocher patina. Iron components with an oxidized brown patina. All markings remain clear and crisp. Mechanically functional. A wonderful condition example of one of the first US signal pistols that is rarely found for sale, let alone in such fantastic condition.Condition
