- Lot Description
US Model 1861 Contract Rifle Musket by Providence Tool
.58 caliber, 40" barrel, no S/N. Bright finish, walnut stock. Standard Providence Tool contract lock markings with two-line "shadow" US, which is also present on the buttplate tang. Lock and breech both dated 1864 , standard V/P proof marks and correctly oriented eagle head, facing the breech, only found on Providence Tool contract barrels. Legible OWA cartouche on counterpane, correct for part of the 1864 deliveries under this contract. Correct 1861 pattern rear sight, front sight/bayonet lug, sling swivels, reproduction straight-shank ramrod.
Provenance: From the Collection of Roger HamiltonGood to very good. Metal with a residue of old oil and scattered oxidation with some light pitting. Barrel bands with more oxidation and discoloration. Makings all clear and legible. Mechanically functional, good bore with moderate pitting. Wood lightly sanded, solid with scattered bumps and dings.Condition
