Arnold, John W. (1842-1900). United States Marshall. TLS, 1p, 8 x 11 in., "Department of Justice, Office of United States Marshall." Chicago, IL. July 12, 1894. Addressed to General Nelson Miles. Accompanied by ANS from James Porter Martin (1836-1895), Lieutenant Colonel & Assistant Adjutant General, US Army.
Arnold relays to Miles, "I have some important arrests to make to-day and I must again ask you for ten of your soldiers to go with my deputy marshals." Arnold required more men to make necessary arrests of Pullman Strike organizers in Chicago. The strike began in May of 1894 when nearly 4,000 Pullman Company factory employees, many who lived in a company community on the south side of Chicago, responded to wage reductions. It spread nationwide and shut down much of the nation's freight and passenger traffic west of Detroit. By order of the President, Arnold and the National Guard intervened in Chicago. Some strikers resisted. At the end of the strike, 30 strikers were killed, 57 were wounded, and property damage exceeded $80 million dollars. In response, President Grover Cleveland designated Labor Day as a federal holiday to placate some angry workers.
