Left barrel flat inspected with block G.E.C. mark and two weak cartouches are present on the coutnerpane, at least one appears to read GEC as well. Missing rear sight, retains both sling swivels and ramrod.
Union Arms Company contract US M1861 rifle muskets are the scarcest of the US Civil War contract long arms. In reality, the firm does not appear to have ever delivered a completed musket to the US government that was accepted, and only sold a handful of completed guns to the state of New York. Edward Robinson was a principle in the Union Arms Company, and his New York based firm of E. Robinson would eventually deliver some 30,000 rifle muskets under various US contracts. Some of his earliest deliveries included arms with Union Arms Company marked locks, and these guns are the closest to a Federally accepted Union Arms M1861 that any collector can get. This gun bears all the correct inspection and sub-inspection marks for a gun delivered by Robinson. It is this cataloger's opinion that this was one of Robinson's early deliveries, utilizing a leftover Union Arms Company lock. For a collector of US M1861 contract rifle muskets this is an extremely difficult gun to find, and is certainly worth adding to your collection.
