- Lot Description
.58 caliber, 40" barrel secured by three barrel bands, bright finish, walnut stock. Lock plate marked: US / BRIDESBURG and dated 1863 at the tail. Breech with matching 1863 date, and with JM sub-inspection on the barrel flat. Two crisp cartouches including the PSS of Porter S Shattuck and FR of Franklin Root are present on the counterpane. Both are known inspectors of Bridesburg marked contract rifle muskets. Retains original rear sight, front sight/bayonet lug, both sling swivels and an original ramrod. The firm of Alfred Jenks & Son, who marked their contract guns "Bridesburg" delivered some 40,000 US M1861 rifle muskets during 1863 and a total of more than 92,000 between 1862 and 1865.
Very good and untouched. Metal with an oxidized brown patina, scattered surface oxidation, and some light pinprick pitting. Markings remain clear and sharp, all metal with a matching patina. Mechanically functional, bore with visible rifling but very dirty and somewhat pitted. Stock very good, with strong edges and two crisp cartouches on the counterpane.Condition
