.58 caliber, 33" barrel, bright finish, iron furniture, walnut stock. Lock with standard Harpers Ferry marks and dated 1860, breech with matching date and standard proof and inspection marks. Two weak cartouches on counterpane, one the TR of Thomas Russell, the other possibly the BM of Benjamin Mills, both Harpers Ferry Rifle Works inspectors, Mills being master armorer during the period of John Brown's Raid. Top of rear barrel band with the rack or issue mark D / 72. Maynard tape priming lock, iron patch box, correct pattern "R" marked M1858 rear sight, front sight, saber bayonet lug. Two flat iron barrel bands, slings swivels, original iron ramrod. Only 3,772 Type II US M1855 Rifles were produced at Harpers Ferry c1859-1861, with a total production of all Harpers Ferry M1855 rifles being only 7,317 c1857-1861, many of which were lost or damaged when the arsenal was set on fire in April 1861 prior to capture by the state of Virginia. The 1855 Rifle is a scarce Civil War era long arm in any condition or configuration and this a particularly nice, honest example that is entirely correct and original.
