- Lot Description
.69 caliber, 44.5" barrel. Bright finish, three barrel bands, walnut stock. Lock with standard Springfield markings that are somewhat weak and dated 1812 at tail. Matching 1812 date on buttplate tang. Standard Springfield proofs at breech. Lock appears to be in the original flint configuration, with an integral, rounded iron pan. The plate has been altered to a rounded profile at the rear, eliminating the pronounced "teat" that is typical of this model. Stock is the correct overall length at 56.75" but is lacking the usual 1795 Type III features including obvious flutes where the comb and wrist come together and the recessed cheek rest. Retains both sling swivels and a period iron ramrod that is somewhat short. An enigma of a musket that may represent part of a repair program after the War of 1812, with an 1812/14 profile stock used to repair an older musket.
Good. Metal with an mottled oxidized patina with scattered surface roughness. Hammer has an old welded repair at the tumbler hole, hammer screw replaced, top jaw screw (and possibly the top jaw) are replaced as well. Upper barrel band a replacement. Mechanically functional, fair bore. Stock lightly sanded with some mars and scuffs and some repaired cracks around the triggerguard and below the lock mortise.Condition
