- Lot Description
.50-70, 32.625" barrel, bright finish, walnut stock. Left side of receiver marked with a spread winged eagle and US / SPRINGFIELD 1871. Top of bolt marked WARD BURTON PATENT / DEC. 20, 1859 FEB 21, 1871. Weak cartouches on reverse of stock. Original rear sight, sling swivels and cleaning rod. Includes US 1855-70 pattern bayonet. Only 1,011 Ward Burton rifles were produced for field trials circa 1871, making it a scarce US martial long arm. It is also one of the earliest bolt action rifles to be issued in any quantity by the US military.
Very good. Barrel a medium pewter patina with scattered age discoloration and minor oxidation. Receiver with some original oil quenched case coloring. All markings in metal crisp and clear. Fine bore and mechanics. Weak cartouches on stock. Stock solid with scattered bumps and dings. Bayonet good with pitting.Condition
